The professional disposition of learners states that educators should promote social justice and equity, while maintaining standards of confidentiality and fairness in all facets of being an educator (GCU, n.d). When it comes to being fair in the classroom, it is important to provide clear expectations both in grading and classroom behavior, and then stick to those expectations. For example, one might have a student that always gets their homework and classwork done on time, but frequently asks to go to their locker. If an expectation is that 3 passes are given per semester and the student has used those passes, it might be a good idea to say no so that the student is more prepared for class, and demonstrate to others the concept of fairness. Another example would be grading assignments fairly – stick to the rubric for assignments and don’t give an extra point where not deserved for “good students”. It is also important to keep in mind, though: Equity OVER equality. What one student needs might look different than what another student needs.
